Full Name: André Luiz Leite Galvão

Jiu-Jitsu World Champion, ADCC champion and black belt graduated by the famous Mestre “Careca”, André Galvão is also a founding member of Atos Jiu Jitsu, one of the best academies in the world. Famous within the sport due to his success on the mat and in the “octogon” (he also fought MMA), André Galvão is easily recognized for his style of Jiu-Jitsu “forward” always looking for the submission and for his battles in the absolute category of the championships of Jiu-Jitsu around the world.
History of Andre Galvao

André Galvão was born on September 29, 1982 in São Paulo – Brazil. André started in martial arts through Judo as a child. It was through his older brother that Galvão discovered Jiu-Jitsu, as his brother already trained in the gentle art.

Galvão started his Jiu-Jitsu training at the age of 16 with Professor Luis Carlos Dagmar, better known as “Careca”, a student of the illustrious Master Osvaldo Alves. It was only in the second year of training that he would meet the person who would become his true master and his inspiration, Fernando Tererê. Dagmar believed that his academy was too small for Galvão’s talent and advised him to train with Tererê who was an excellent teacher and had other talented fighters of Galvão’s level in his academy.

André Galvão and Fernando Tererê

Under Tererê’s guidance, André Galvão’s Jiu-Jitsu evolved enormously. Tererê was one of the leading Jiu-Jitsu fighters of the time, world champion and the best in his weight at the turn of the century. Galvão followed Tererê through his split from Alliance, the birth of Brasa and TT for a period of 3 years. In the middle of 2005, when it was time for Galvão to receive his black belt, a series of events drew Tererê’s attention away from Jiu-Jitsu. Instead of receiving his black belt from Tererê himself, who was absent, on graduation day (May 19, 2005), Tererê’s right-hand man and TT partner, Eduardo Telles, took him to his hometown so that André could have the honor of being graduated by his first teacher, Mestre “Careca”.

When Tererê left the sport due to his well-known personal problems, André Galvão ended up leaving TT to join Brasa. In an interview with Tatame magazine in 2007, André Galvão stated that his idols in Jiu-Jitsu were his teacher, Tererê – for his personality and the way he always managed to excite the public, Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro, for his incredible sweeps and “Leozinho” Vieira for being athletic and what that brought to Jiu-Jitsu.

Galvão has always been an avid competitor and unlike most Jiu-Jitsu fighters, he dedicated himself to fighting in all championships, not just the biggest ones – something he counted on to keep evolving. André won 4 consecutive World Championships, from Blue Belt to Black Belt (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005), winning weight and open weight two years in a row, at purple belt and brown belt (2003 and 2004). He reached the final in 2006 and 2007 but failed to win. The other appeared again in 2008. That same year, André Galvão joined the world of MMA, obtaining a victory by submitting Jeremiah Metcalf, a former Strikeforce fighter, an organization that Galvão himself would join months later.

In October 2008, Galvão teamed up with his friend Ramon Lemos to form a new Jiu-Jitsu team. The two have a strong evangelical influence in their lives and have brought their religious beliefs to the mat. All of his students had a similar background and for that reason the two decided to name the team “Acts”, a direct reference to the “Book of Acts” (the fifth book of the New Testament). The team has had enormous success in the black belt divisions, with several fighters winning the World Championships, the Pan American Championships and the Jiu-Jitsu World Pro Cup in Abu Dhabi.

André Galvão and MMA

Having become a professional MMA fighter in 2008, Galvão has fought in some of the biggest organizations in the world such as Dream (Japan) and Strikeforce (USA). He left Strikeforce of his own free will, after a successful year (2010) in which he fought 3 times, winning the first two and losing the last. He had plans to join TUF (The Ultimate Fighter) – as he explained in the BJJ Heroes interview in January 2010 – but that ended up not happening. He returned to Jiu-Jitsu competitions on March 7th, winning the World Pro Cup trials in San Diego, California (-83kg), also winning the Pan-American a few weeks later – submitting all his opponents, with the exception of Eduardo Santoro in the final. Continuously improving his level, Galvão was extraordinary at the 2011 edition of the ADCC, the most prestigious tournament in the world, achieving gold in both weight and absolute, proving why he is considered one of the best in the world, and continued to win the superfights of the ADCC in the years 2013,
