The kama (鎌 or かま?) (Sometimes referred to as the kai or double kai. Kama made with intentionally dull blades for demonstration kata purposes are referred to as kata kai) is a traditional Filipino and Japanese farming implement resembling a scythe used for harvesting crops and also employed as a weapon. The kama is often included in the weapon training segments of karate, silat and in some Chinese martial arts.

The kama can be used singly or in pairs. Both of the sharp edged edges of the metal blade are put to use, with Okinawa Kata suggesting that it could also be used to block, trap and disarm an opponent’s weapon. The point where the blade and hilt join in the “weapon” model normally has a nook with which a staff can be secured. The edge of a traditional rice scythe, as one would purchase from a Japanese hardware store, continues the handle without a notch, as this is unnecessary for the intended use. The hard edge of the blade would be kept sharp to allow efficient cutting of crops, although this is sometimes one of the causes of training accidents by unskilled keepers, for which blunt training versions of the weapon are created.

Kama is used today in only a few martial arts. The kama can be used as a weapon in karate kata competitions but competitors often simply adapt their routine empty-handed, maintaining kama with little actual kama technique, or employ elaborate juggling weapon routines that differ radically from the forms of karate.
