AUCM – Classical Chinese Herbal Medicine – Part 3 (16 sessions) aims to present herbal medication in the most traditional manner possible, intending to teach herbs in the traditional way, as per Jeffrey’s perspective—how he was taught.
In the case of AUCM – Classical Chinese Herbal Medicine – Part 3 with Jeffrey Yuen, Chinese herbal medicine represents an intricate and potent therapeutic approach. In contemporary society, the conventional methods of introducing Chinese herbal medicine have undergone streamlining and simplification, significantly influenced by the Western pharmaceutical paradigm. However, this was not the historical approach to teaching herbal medicine.
In the past, the pursuit of herbalism required a deeper understanding of botanical substances beyond mere classification or memorization of textual information. The initial stages of the learning process involved developing a profound understanding of botanical substances. Whenever possible, the apprentice would gain practical knowledge in herb identification and collection, paying careful attention not only to the herb’s physical attributes but also to its ecological context. The apprentice would also consume various herbs and document personal observations about their effects.
While comprehensive knowledge of each herb was considered crucial, a significant portion of an apprentice’s time was dedicated to observation and assisting the master. Initially, the apprentice would observe the synergistic effects of herbs when combined in various formulations. Similar to how one’s true nature cannot be fully understood until they engage with others, the distinct characteristics of herbs are revealed through their interactions with other herbs. This holds true when individuals consume the same herbal combination. The individual acts as a supplementary element within the dynamic environment cultivated through the amalgamation. Concurrently, the cultivation of the skill of herb preparation, also known as pao zhi, was undertaken.
