AUCM PRO hosted Classical Chinese Herbal Medicine – Part 2 with Jeffrey Yuen on July 28, 2021, following the course conducted from May 21-24, 2021.
Chinese herbal medicine stands out as an intricate and potent modality. The contemporary approaches to introducing it have undergone simplification, aligning more with the Western pharmaceutical model’s influence. However, this deviates from the historical teaching of herbal medicine.
In the past, to qualify as a herbalist, one needed a more profound understanding of herbs beyond simple categorizations or memorization. The initial learning phases prioritized gaining an in-depth understanding of herbs. The apprentice, in their learning journey, engaged in identifying and collecting herbs whenever possible. This process extended beyond observing the herb itself to encompass its environment. Additionally, the apprentice partook in the consumption of various botanicals, monitoring personal reactions.
While familiarity with individual herbs remained crucial, the apprentice dedicated the majority of their time to observing and assisting the master. Initial observations included understanding how herbs interacted within formulations. Similar to comprehending a person through their interactions, the qualities of herbs surfaced based on their interplay. The same principle applied to individuals consuming a shared herbal combination, likening the individual to an extra herb within the energetic milieu formed by the combination. Concurrently, the development of herbal preparation (pao zhi) skills took place.
This 16-session program spans a year and aims to convey herbal medicine in the most traditional manner possible. Jeffrey emphasizes, “the purpose of this course is to teach herbs in the traditional way…the way I was taught.”
