Introduction to Amibroker by Howard B.Bandy
Review of the book “Introduction to AmiBroker” by Dr. Howard B. Bandy
I have been reading Howard Bandy’s new book “Introduction to AmiBroker” and it is excellent.
The book is strongly focused on the “beginner AmiBroker”, but it will also be a valuable reference for both intermediate and advanced users.
The 590 pages are packed with clear information that will allow an AmiBroker beginner to move from AmiBroker installation to competition in graphics, post-testing, explorations, and optimization.
A particularly useful section is titled “30 Minutes to Get Useful Results,” which allows a beginner to complete 10 very practical exercises that cover the Chart of an Action, the Application of a Trend Line, the Drawing of a Moving Average, Do a watchlist, Run and Browse, Run a one-share backup test, Run a portfolio backup test, Optimize a trading system, Perform a Forward validation and Scan to buy and sell signals.

I suspect that most beginners will take a little over thirty minutes, however as each step is complete the power of AmiBroker becomes clearer. And there is a strong determination to go back and complete all the detailed knowledge needed. This detailed guide is organized in a clear and easy to understand way along with examples and code that you can copy and use. The book can be used as a manual or it can be read and reread for understanding; Chapters 1, 3, 4, 9, and 10 are worth reading and rereading to absorb both principles and practices.
AmiBroker is a very large and complex software package. Experienced AmiBroker users often claim that AmiBroker has 10 times the power. And functionality of the previous software package they used (eg MetaStock). AmiBroker is also developing further at astonishing speed (30 Beta updates and 3 major releases per year). Learning all about AmiBroker is similar to “Drinking from a Fire Hose”. This book does not teach a new user everything about AmiBroker; however, it does teach all the basics and provide a good springboard for more complex problems. This is important; The book focuses on what you need to know first and to quickly achieve realistic and useful results. Because the book focuses on what the beginner needs to know, it is much easier to access than the AmiBroker manual.

Given the breadth and depth of AmiBroker software, mastering the “Introduction to AmiBroker” is likely to give you access to more software power than your previous platform. There are still more levels of sophistication available and your skill may grow as you progress to these more advanced levels over time.
When you have completed and digested “Introduction to AmiBroker”. Howard Bandy’s first book “Quantitative Trading Systems” is the ideal next step. Hopefully Howard gets to work on another “Advanced AmiBroker” project during 2009.
