Howard Lynch succeeded legendary Blair Cherry as Amarillo High’s football coach for 14 seasons (1937-1950). During this time, the Sandies were 129-29-1, won a state title in 1940, and were a state finalist in 1948.
In Lynch’s first season, the Sandies were 9-2 and won the district title. The 1940 season remains a school record for most wins in a season. From 1942 to 1944, Lynch’s teams were a combined 33-3. During the 1940s, AHS was a phenomenal 99-16.
Lynch went on to become one of the most effective school administrators in AISD history. In 1951, Lynch became an assistant principal at Amarillo High. He then became Tascosa High’s first principal in 1958 and retired in 1967.
Howard Lynch died at 87 on December 10, 1989.
