Bill Wolfe’s journey into the world of martial arts commenced with judo and jiu-jitsu. While serving in the army, he was trained in hand-to-hand combat by Harold Stairn, a Canadian soldier, and one of the few British instructors offering such training during World War II.

Between 1969 and 1972, Wolfe represented the Canadian Army Judo team. Following his military service, he became an unarmed combat instructor in the Canadian Army. Post his army stint, he transitioned to law enforcement, actively participating in numerous arrests. He was a member of a specialized police SWAT unit and later worked as a police instructor, specializing in infantry and close combat training. Wolfe then joined private security agencies, further expanding his expertise.

Wolfe achieved a 6th Dan rank from the Korean Federation of Original Korean Hapkido Association (awarded in Korea), a 4th Dan rank from the French Federation of Aiki Goshindo Ju Jutsu, a 1st Dan rank from Kodokan Judo, and a 1st Dan rank from the French Federation of Rystu Tio Jutsu. Additionally, he became a certified Muay Thai Trainer after completing training at the Thai Armed Forces Training Center.

In addition to his accomplishments, Bill Wolfe developed his own melee system called Defendo. He created 18 instructional DVDs covering various aspects of Defendo. Notably, he condensed this extensive knowledge into a 2-hour DVD titled “Defendo CQB the CORE,” which, according to him, encapsulates all essential aspects of unarmed combat. This condensed course serves as a comprehensive guide to rukopashke, representing the culmination of Wolfe’s expertise in the field.
