Carl dedicated his life to training, studying and teaching the techniques he knew would work in real life situations. This was based on his own experience and that of men before him who used these techniques in military, civilian and law enforcement situations and lived to tell the tales.Carl Cestari was best known for his research, training, and teaching of various World War II close-combat methods; however, Carl had extensive experience in Japanese and Okinawan martial arts. From the age of 7, he began training in Kodokan Judo with world-renowned instructor Yoshisada Yonezuka and later in Tani-Ha Shito Ryu Karate with Shigeru Kimura at the Judo-Karate Center in Cranford, New Jersey. Carl was a martial artist through and through, his love of martial arts and their early history is something he has researched throughout his life.
In the mid-1970s, Carl began researching various close-range military combat systems that were developed for troops during World War II. Carl has sought out former close combat instructors to train, interview, or correspond with over the years. These instructors came from units such as the US Army Special Forces, US Army Rangers, Paratroopers, Marines and Boy Scouts, (ONI) Office of Naval Intelligence, (CIC) Counter Intelligence Corps), (MID) Military Intelligence Division, and the First Special Service Force, also known as the “Devil’s Brigade” or “Black Devil”.
Carl’s research into the martial arts and various systems of self-defense began with his collection of martial arts magazines, books, and correspondence classes. Over a period of 40 years, Carl collected several thousand books, hundreds of magazines, videos and DVDs. His collection was one of the most extensive and impressive libraries in the WORLD. There, where there were books ranging from Judo and Jujutsu, to French Savate, to Russian sombo, from naked boxing to all-in wrestling; Military Combat Manuals to privately published manuals. Books from all over the world; China, Japan, Indonesia, Burma, India, France, England and Russia, to name a few.
Carl was most influenced by the works of William E. Fairbairn, Eric A. Sykes, Dermot O’Neill, Rex Applegate, John Styers and Charles Nelson. Through Carl’s more than 40 years of training and extensive real-world experience, he has developed a very practical method of Self-Defense. Carl referred to his teachings as “Defendu”, i.e. (Gutter Fighting). Carl was always looking to improve his own personal protection methods to survive on the streets; he looked at EVERYTHING regardless of where or who it came from. He was NEVER close minded and was open to ANYTHING that would make him a more DANGEROUS opponent. As he stated;
“My interest in FIGHTING ARTS is SIMPLE:I want the BEST methods of SPILLING my enemy’s SHIT”. n —
