With over 40 years of teaching experience in Korean Martial Arts, Grandmaster Ik-Hwan Kim is an authentic 9th Dan in both Taekwondo and Hapkido. Originating from South Korea, he established a Taekwondo and Hapkido school before immigrating to the United States. Having undergone training in the Korean National Police, he also served as a hand-to-hand combat instructor for the United States Armed Forces in South Korea.

Upon his arrival in the United States in 1981, Grandmaster Kim continued to impart his knowledge in Taekwondo, Hapkido, and weapons. He assumed the role of instructor for the Sussex County New Jersey State Police area and later founded the Universal Martial Arts Institute. Under his guidance, the institute expanded, establishing schools across the United States and forming associations in North America, South America, and Europe.

During the 1990s, Grandmaster Kim produced a series of martial arts videotapes, which found their way into universities and libraries throughout the United States and Canada. These tapes, focusing on Hapkido, weapons, and self-defense techniques for women, continue to be sought after by enthusiasts, further enhancing his global reputation among students and instructors.

Over the past twenty-five years, Grandmaster Kim has conducted numerous seminars at partner schools worldwide. He adheres to a rigorous daily training routine and actively participates in his students’ training. According to him, the high number of instructors he has nurtured stands as the ultimate testament to the quality of his training methods.
